For all I know everyone notates using the numeric pad, but I thought I would mention it anyway as a very speedy way of notating once your brain gets used it. Press Num Lock and the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 keys become Breve to demi-semi quaver respectively, (no need to cycle throughout the note durations to get the one you want just hit the appropriate key, but the + and - keys will cycle through the note durations if you want to). The 7, 8 and 9 keys toggle natural, flat and sharp respectively. The * key gives a bar line, the / key gives a tie, the . key toggles the dot and double dot note extensions and the Enter key enters as normal. Use the arrow keys next to the number pad to move up and down the stave. Once I got used to these functions on the number pad keys my notation speed just took off, and notating a score became a much less tedious process.
