I always enter the lyrics first when starting a new song. After positioning the first word correctly the notes entered will be in the proper matching vertical position to match the words. You can follow your lyric as notes are entered and check against the music copy you are notating from to see where you are at. I also pencil in the measure numbers on the music copy that I am working from as another guide to where I am at in the song.
