Keeping Your Place - Measure Numbers

If you have multiple staffs and cannot see all of them at the same time in your edit window then pressing Ctrl+G will tell you what measure you are in.

An alternative solution that works for me is to make the top staff the melody line (or enough measures of whole note rests to complete your composition), go to page setup and add measure numbers. Then go to Staff: Move Staff and click on the staff number where you are working (and cannot see) and rearrange the staff numbers so you can see the staff with the measure numbers (the top staff). Measure numbers do not move with the staff.
