Although NoteWorthy Composer Version 1.75b + Web Update 2 will work with Windows Vista, as it stands right now, you will not be able to access the help file included with the NWC program. A quote from Microsoft demonstrates their action related to this:
- "Therefore, starting with the Microsoft Windows Vista and the Microsoft Windows Server Code Name "Longhorn" operating system releases, the Windows Help program will not ship as a component of Windows. Also, third-party programs that include .hlp files are prohibited from redistributing the Windows Help program together with their products."
From our point of view, this is an unprecedented action from Microsoft, which historically does a very good job of supporting backward compatibility. In our opinion, there is nothing inherently wrong with the Windows Help file format. It is a rather simple technology that is small and efficient (which is why we use it). It allows us to create efficient help files that, until now, work on all 32-bit versions of Windows (perhaps this is exactly the advantage that Microsoft is eliminating). The justification for inconveniencing users of Microsoft Windows Vista by removing it is rather unclear to us. The problem is compounded by Microsoft explicitly forbidding software vendors from helping the user. This looks to be part of a new strategic direction for Microsoft that is inconsistent with its historical approach.
We will be adopting a new help file system for NWC2, and also exploring your options with regard to NWC1. We will announce further details as we have them. In the mean time, both NWC1 Help and NWC2 Help are available here on our web site.
Microsoft has indicated that:
- "Users who want to view 32-bit .hlp files must download the program from the Microsoft Download Center, and then install it on their computers. The download for Windows Help is still in development and will be available in early 2007."
However, we are unable to find such a download on their site as of this writing.
