When and under what circumstances will strings players use 'open strings'

I am getting stuck in my theory past paper.

(geez it's been long since I post here...)

Whenever they have chords that include notes that can be open, whenever the score tells them and whenever they seek more sound.

I often compose pieces that ask for open strings, because I like the sound of open strings sometimes.

Also, if the instrument is in-tune, open strings
allow the player to check his/her intonation.
