Is there any way to save a NW2 file as a MIDI file? I know it is possible to do so with a NWC file, but what about NW2?

You'll love this one. File, Export gives you just what you want.

Of course, that has been hashed about before. "Save As" creates the impression that the file has the same information, merely being in a different format. "Export" creates the impression that perhaps something is being lost in translation. So, "Export" ought to be (and in NWC2, is) the correct menu descriptor, since MIDI contains less information that the original NWC (1 or 2) file.

It is a classic trade-off. NWC1 used to have an import/export menu, but we constantly fielded questions about how to save as MIDI. So, we moved this into the Open and Save commands. Now, we get questions about why the notation does not look the same after saving to MIDI. Since the volume of these questions never really changed much, Export/Import seems the most appropriate, and is what appears in NWC2.

The classic trade-off. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. I'd rather do.

Why not have both saving to midi and export to midi in the menu?

They do the same thing, but users don't all think alike.

Hmmm... it has been removed from "Save As" with good reason, as stated (not by me) above. It could only be reinstated with a disclaimer "please note that some information may be lost when saving in MIDI format".
Something like saving a Word-document as a *.txt file...

Yeah, but MS Word -> .txt file *is* a "Save As..."...

Export as Midi ...
Import Midi ...
